How to identify and help a struggling student.
Louise Hayes
-The gap between ability and aptitude
A sign to look for may be that the student shows ability yet is unable to produce classwork to show this.
-Trying very hard with little success
The student may be trying really hard but still consistently producing little or poor work.
-Straying off-track
This means things like being confused, misunderstanding instructions and forgetting deadlines.
-Missing homework
This could show many things. The student may be ashamed as they cannot complete the work or the student may have forgetton what they learnt previously

Important:
Remember students must be referred to the special education team or to an education psychologist. Teachers are not qualified to diagnose learning difficulties.
Follow the response to intervention and if needed have individual student evaluations as outlined on the LDA website

If students are diagnosed with a learning disabilty, work together with the special education team and the parents.
Always reference the students IEP when planning and consider the student's preferred learning style.
