COVID-19 Antibody Tests - Coggle Diagram
COVID-19 Antibody Tests
How do the
tests work?
The doctors test for the antibodies proteins in the bloodstream that shows if there has been a past/current infection.
The tests are taken after a full recovery from COVID-19, as that is the best time to test if antibodies have been recovered from the exposure to the disease.
A nurse takes a blood sample from a vein, generally by finger prick or drawing blood in your arm and runs it to test for the antibodies.
What is an Antibody?
After being exposed to a foreign substance, an antigen, the antibodies continue to circulate in the blood providing protection against the antigen.
Antibodies are protein components of the immune system that circulate in the blood, recognizing foreign cells and neutralizing them.
Effectiveness
-
If you get an antibody test that was positive it is encouraged that you then get a regular COVID-19 test to see if you are still infected.
It does not show when they were infected so doctors do not know if it is a past, recent, or current infection.
The tests are more helpful in showing how many antibodies are prevalent in a population and more about prior infections.
