celts
Around the year 500 BC, the Celts began to cross the sea to settle in the British Isles. They were probably attracted to Britain by the promise of rich and fertile farmland.
Although they lived simple lives, they also introduced some important new innovations to Britain. For example, they were the first to introduce iron working and the first to use the iron plough. They also built or expanded defensive forts around Britain.
Archaeologists have made discoveries that suggest some Celts were highly skilled – for example, the Battersea shield displays intricate metal working skills.
