Metal Ages ( bloque 5 )
Periods of the Metal Ages
The Metal Ages are divided into three ages depending on the type of metal that was used:
Copper age
Copper tools and weapons were very fragile.
Bronze Age
Bronze, an alloy of copper and tin, was more resistant.
They used it to make farming tools
and sophisticated weapons.
Iron Age
Iron was more abundant and
resistant than the previous metals.
Discoveries and inventions
Humans found that they could use fire to transform certain minerals into new substances: metals. By melting these metals, they could mould them to make utensils. This marked the beginning of the Metal Ages. New tools were created, like the plough, which increased harvests. Populations grew and villages became towns.

Lifestyle and culture
The discovery of metals caused great changes.
• New jobs arose:
– Miners extracted minerals from the ground.
– Blacksmiths made weapons and tools.
– Craftsmen decorated these new utensils.
– Traders exchanged different products. The need for minerals promotedv long-distance trade and contact with other cultures.
• social differences grew since some families owned lots of land and livestock and became town administrators.
• Conflicts increased over the control of towns. They built walls and raised armies to protect them.
• They began building giant, stone megaliths. They used them as tombs or religious sites.
