Special Education Needs Process By: Juan Camilo Ramirez
Keeping Students in the classroom
It is ideal to keep the students in the classroom as much as possible as removing a student is both damaging for their education and sense of self-esteem.
Students should be included as much as possible in class participation. Teaching would be altered so as to include a variety of different styles with the aim to best aid each student's particular needs.
Only in extreme cases where a student is continually struggling with the course work should it be considered taking them out of the class and giving them special attention.
When a student is removed to get additional assistance there should be a clear pathway for them to be able to return to class when they have caught up to an acceptable level.
Helping Individual Students Achieve their potential
Identifying students with potential educational problems as soon as possible
Have students evaluated. Does this student have a disability which requires the implementation of special education needs? what are the students specific special needs?
Inform the parents and explain to them the due process to follow.
Organize a meeting with the students homeroom-teacher, subject teachers, and school counselor to discuss how we can best work together to aid the student.
create an individualized student learning profile and plan. this should be based on how we can best help this student and what teaching techniques this student responds to best.
If a student does not have a disability, the focus should be on trying different tactics to keep the student engage in class and ensure he/she is actively involved.
Working with parents
Constantly communicate with parents and inform them if their child is struggling in class and falling behind. Discuss with parents the possibility of independently evaluating the student for special educational assistance.
If students doesn't have a serious educational difficulty, discuss with parents how their child can improve and where they are struggling.
If student does have a serious educational difficulty, inform parents on how we will move forward and create an individualized educational plan for the student.
After creating the individualized educational plan provide the parents with information and plan to keep the process as transparent as possible.
Continue to follow up with the parents and keep in contact regarding the student's progress in class.
Discuss with the parents how to best assist the students when he/she is not in school.
Educating about Special Education
Create a stigma free classroom environment around students who need extra educational needs.
Educate students, parents, and teachers on the importance of being able to ask for assistance.
Encourage collaboration in the classroom and allow different students to work with each other.
Create a classroom environment where all of the students are able to participate in discussions and where they feel comfortable and safe speaking up.
Have students complete forms on how they view their progress in class particularly on what they are struggling and what they are doing well.
