SAND DUNES: SANDS FOR LIFE
They are biodiversity hotspots where carpets of orchids still survive alongside song birds, butterflies and a wide range of endangered insects.
Healthy dunes have bare sand constantly in motion. These hills are built, blown out, and built again. Many unique and special plants and invertebrates continuingly re-colonize the open space.
Within 80 years, nearly 90% of open sand dunes have disappeared. they have been replaced by dense grass and scrub, becoming fixed and stable so the rare wildlife has disappeared.
