Ekison's Eight Stages of Development
Trust vs Mistrust - birth to 1 year. Sensing that the world is safe and I can trust others
Autonomy vs shame and doubt - 1-3 years. Knowing that I can act on my own and be independent
Initiative vs guilt - 3-6 years. Planning and doing new things and managing failures
Industry vs inferiority - 6-12 years.Learning basic competencies and comparing myself favorably with others
Identity vs identity confusion - 20-40 years. INtegrating my roles into a single, consistent identity
Intimacy vs Isolation - 20- 40 years. Sharing myself deeply without fear of losing my identity
Generativity vs stagnation - 40-65 years. Contributing to others and society through my offspring and productive work
Integrity vs despair - 65+ years. Appraising my life in a way taht allowa me to appreciate its meaning
Crisis and strengths
Crisis - must adaptively or maladaptive cope with task in each developmental stage
Adaptively - acquire strengths needed for next developmental stage
Maladaptively - less likely to able to adapt to later problems
Strengths - motivating charactersitics and beliefs derive successful resolution of crisis in each stage
Psychohistorical Analysis - application of lifespan theory to lives of historical figures
Psychological Tests - instruments based on crises in stages
Trust - early bonds with motehr later curious, sociable and popular
Identity - string identity associated with greater cognitive and emotional functioning in college students.
Crisis may begin later than age 12
Continuing process over the lifespan
Generativity - evokes need to feel closer to others
correlated with extraversion, openness to new experiences
likely to ve involved in community
Maturity - high ego integrity - spent much time reviewing their lives
Ethnic identity - ethnic minorities significant factor in determining sense of self
