polymer
polymerization
addition polymerization
a polymer that forms by simple linking of monomers without the co-generation of other products
for example
polyethylene
stylene
tetrafluoroethylene
condensation polymerization
for example
polyamide
polypropylene
polyester
a form of step-growth polymerization in which monomers and/or oligomers react with each other to form larger structural units while releasing smaller molecules as a byproduct such as water or methanol
monomer can be in ring shape but need to have ring opening polymerization.
for example
lactone
lactam
structure and properties of polymer
we can seperate the polymer in 2 ways
the first way is
natural polymer
are polymers compounds that can be fine naturally in our environment
occur naturally
produces from biological process
for example
cellulose
protein
glycogen
synthetic polymer
are polymer compounds that are produced artificially by humans
do not occur naturally
produces from chemical process
for example
acrylic fiber
nylon
polystylene
the second way ( based on polymer chain )
Branched-chain Polymers
When linear chains of a polymer form branches, then, such polymers are categorized as branched chain polymers
Cross-linked Polymers
They are composed of bifunctional and trifunctional monomers. They have a stronger covalent bond in comparison to other linear polymers
linear polymer
The structure of polymers containing long and straight chains fall into this category. PVC, i.e. poly-vinyl chloride is largely used for making pipes and electric cables
modification of polymer structure
it has several ways to modifide polymer
adding additives
to improve the properties of polymer
vulcanization
to achieve improved elasticity, resilience, tensile strength, viscosity, hardness and weather resistance
plasticizer
that increase the elasticity of a material.Plasticizers soften the PVC to make it flexible and bendable
conductivity of polymer
In normally, polymer is a Electrical insulation but some of them can conduct electricity.
for example
polyacetylene
polythiophene
co - polymer
modification of polymer
to change the polymer‘s structure
for example
change cellulose to cellulose acetate
change chitin to chitosan
change polyvinylacetate to polyvinyl alcohol
