Webinar #2
Sleep Deprivation
Caused by sleep disorders
Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is caused by excess soft tissues (often linked to obesity) blocking airways during sleep.
No cure exists for sleep apnea, however medical devices such as breathing pumps can be used. Otherwise, weight loss to reduce soft tissue blockages is recommended but not always a viable treating option.
Insomnia
Difficulties falling asleep, and staying asleep
Sedatives is the class of medications used to treat insomnia. Due to the body’s ability of building tolerances to drugs it is likely that the patient will require heavier doses of sedatives to maintain good health. However, this in turn can incur drug dependencies/addictions, which can be incredibly difficult to treat especially with the underlying insomnia.
Narcolepsy
Narcolepsy is essentially the inability to stay awake.
Xyrem is a medication that can be used to treat Narcolepsy fairly effectively.
