Why did the Allies want to establish a supply line to Russia?
Russia wasn't very industrialized.
They couldn't supply their troops very well
The more industrialized British and French could supply them better.
Russia could go on the offensive again.
Russia couldn't even launch offensives anymore with terrible supply and transportation situations.
How did the Zimmerman Note draw America into the War?
The Zimmerman Note was an offer to Mexico from Germany to work together to attack the US, but was intercepted by the British.
In exchange for helping Germany, the Mexicans would regain lands lost to the US.
Intercepted by the British and passed to the Americans.
Greatly angered the US, was one of the straws that broke the Camel's back, leading to the US going to war.
Along with Unrestricted Submarine Warfare, this forced the US to join the war.
The War spread throughout the world.
Japan assisted the Allies in conquering Germany's Pacific Islands and Tsingtao in China.
British and French subjects in their colonies are shipped to Europe to fight
The Allies conquered all of Germany's colonies with the exception of German East Africa, which held out to the end.
Colonials learning to fight led to better independence movements in the colonies.

This is an example of Nationalism because the colonial troops who fought in the war developed a better sense of a National Identity and wanted to fight for it.

This is an example of Total War because all kinds of countries, Russia being the best example in this section, were pouring all the resources they could into winning the War.

Governments took control of their economies because they needed the resources necessary for victory.

Leaders feared that reporting the war honestly would turn people against the idea
Propaganda was used to keep up morale and support for the war.
Most facilities were converted to munition factories and unemployment virtually disappeared

How did Total War lead to rationing?
Total war led to rationing because otherwise the country would run out of resources.
Total war means that countries used all of their available resources for the war
The war took millions of lives and changed an incredible amount of people forever.

To make or become different.
Total war brought reliance on women by governments
Women worked in factories, offices, and shops in place of men.
Most women stopped working when the war ended. The war changed views of what women were able to do

What strategies new to World War I probably contributed to the destruction of homes, villages and farms?
The new Trench air air warfare strategies contributed to the destruction of homes, villages and farms. Since Tanks were the only source of transportation to get through the miles of trenches, they went through villages as well.
Why might Westerners have experienced disillusionment in the wake of World War I?
Because of the suffering that resulted from the Great War, that left a deep mark on their society. The insecurity and the despair that many civilians had experienced are reflected in the art and literature of that time.
What treaties were signed to end World War I?
There were multiple peace treaties that were signed to bring peace upon the countries, but one of the most important treaties is the Treaty of Versailles. It was signed on June 28th, 1919, and it started to effect the countries on January 10th, 1920.
Approximately how many soldiers died and were wounded in the war?
About 8.5 million soldiers died and another 21 million soldiers were wounded as a result of the first World War.
What were the rankings of the countries based on battlefield deaths of major combatants?
Germany had the most combatant deaths, with 1.8 million and the United States had the least, with 100,000. Second highest was Russia, with 1.7 million and the second lowest was the Ottoman Empire, with 315,000.
What new technologies were being invented to help the War?
So many new inventions were being made, such as the Trench Coat, Sanitary Pads, Tanks, Machine Guns, Flamethrowers, Poison Gas, Tracer Bullets, Airplanes, Submarines, Radios, and Mortars.
What was one of the most lethal diseases during this era?
One of the most lethal and deadliest diseases was the Flu, it had struck in 1918 and killed around 20 million people. Together, the Flu, starvation, other diseases, and slaughter, spelled tragedy. An entire generation of Europeans was wiped out.

The Allies Win the War
What effect did the Russian Revolution have on Russia’s role in World War I?
With Russia withdrawing from the war, this gave the Germans an easy win in the Eastern Front. This made Germany be able to put all of their troops into the Western Front for one last push for the war. Eight months after Russia's new government took over, they decided to call a truce with Germany and step down from the war.
How did the surrender of the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria and the revolution in Austria-Hungary lead to the end of World War I?
After they all surrendered and Austria had a revolution, all that was left was Germany. Germany though was very weak and most of their soldiers in mutiny. This made them turn against their leader who then stepped down. After this, they met with the commander of France and they signed an Armistice to stop the war.
What Impact did Influeza have on the war?
The Spanish Flu (Influenza) emerged spring of 1918 threatening nations on each side of the war. Killing millions of soldiers and civilians. In India, 12 million died of Influenza and Berlin alone on once day lost 1,500. In total, 20 million people died around the world from influenza.
How did Herbert Sulzbach's vision of the armistice differ from what actually occurred?
His way of telling them was that pretty much they were beaten and humbled by how bad they lost when really it was an agreement that neither side had won and they just agreed to stop. He told his men that they surrendered and lost.
