HSA 5000 Problem Solving Mind Map "The Hiring Dilemma"
Overview of the Situation
Janet is a hiring manager for the Emergency Department at Davis Perkin's Hospital. James Cannon who is the new president of the hospital recently presented a speech in which he heavily focused on the importance of maintaining the culture of the hospital. Following this speech, Janet has now found herself in a dilemma while trying to hire a new candidate for the emergency department. She has narrowed down the candidates to Brian and Shelia, however, she is having trouble deciding which one would be best as a new hire for her department.
The Two Candidates
Shelia
Adheres to and fits the technical standards of the hospital. However, there is a fear that she will not be a team player with other members of the department
In regard to Mr. Cannon's Speech, Shelia would help to maintain the standard of care that Davis Perkins is known for but only in terms of her technical ability.
Brian
Still is Qualified for the position, as he did graduate from a well accredited nursing school. However, his technical practices are not as fine tuned as Shelia's.
It should be noted that Davis Perkins Hospital is well known as a "teaching hospital" meaning that even though Brian's skills are not as fine tuned, this hospital is the perfect atmosphere for him to continue to learn and grow as a nurse.
Brain does however completely encompass the morale and values that Davis Perkin's strives to have. There is also NO concern of him not being a team player or fitting in well with the existing employee's within the department.
Major and Minor Problems
The Major problem at hand is that Janet is unable to make a decision on which candidate is the best fit for the ED. Prolonging this decision is putting the hospital and department in jeopardy of losing revenue due to the fact that the department may be short staffed while waiting
Other Problems
Another issue that is present is that at Davis Perkins there is no established value and mission statement. Or an existing one has not been accurately presented to hiring managers outside of the speech that Mr. Cannon gave
Stakeholders Involved in the Situation
Patients
Both potential and current patients are at risk of not receiving the standard of care in which they expect from Davis Perkins depending on the hiring decision that Janet makes.
Brian
is affected because he is uncertain whether he will be given a position at the hospital or not
Shelia
is affected in the same manner as Brian because she too is uncertain of her job security at Davis Perkins
Janet
is affected because the decision that she makes will affect the overall tone and morale of the emergency department at Davis Perkins. She could also negatively or inaccurately depict the culture that James Cannon is trying to achieve; therefore, her job could be in question as well depending on the decision that she makes.
James Cannon
His reputation as president of the hospital is at stake if Janet's hiring decision does not accurately represent and maintain the culture in the way that he wishes for it to be depicted.
Staff of the Emergency Department
Is at risk of their departments' overall morale being negatively affected if Shelia is hired.
Underlying Causes
There is no explicit mission, and value of the hospital that has been presented outside that of President Cannon's speech
The decision to hire incoming nurses for the ED is the sole responsibility of one individual
Options to Resolve
James Cannon should establish an explicit mission and value for the hospital, therefore, making hiring less difficult
Nothing needs to be done in terms of policy or administration, Janet just needs to make a decision that she feels is best. Sometimes hiring is not the easiest
Janet should meet with some of the supervisors within her department that she is the hiring manager for and have them help her make the decision. This way, it is not a decision that she would make entirely on her own.
RECOMMENDATION:
For this specific situation, I recommend option c. I recommend this option because it seems that it would be beneficial to streamline the hiring process by getting other individuals involved in the decision. Both potential hires are more than qualified for the position. The issue is that one fits the morale and values of the department better and the other adheres more towards the technical standards. By involving other supervisors in the decision, Janet would be able to ensure that most individuals in the department agree or disagree with her decision. Therefore, and individual would be able to be chosen that is best for the department.
