Railways
The number of rail journeys in the last 20 years
This means £25 billion is being spent to upgrade the network by 2019
HS2 is planned link London and the north of England (Manchester and Leeds)
Planned to be completed by 2026 and costing £43 billion
It should dramatically cut times for rail journeys -- The trip form London to Birmingham from an hour and a half to 49mins
A possible extension to Scotland may occur in the future.
Ports
The importance of the UK sea ports have declined with the increase of air travel and the use of the channel tunnel.
96% of trade still comes through UK ports
This employs 120,000
The largest ports are operated by private companies
Belfast -- £50 million have been invested in facilities to service off shore renewable energy sector. Land is available to acomodate manufacturing for wind, wave and tidal energy.
Bristol (Avonmouth) -- £195 million invested for bulk handling and storage facilities
Felixstowe and Harwich -- a new rail terminal at Felixstowe and upgrade cruise service facilities at Hawich
Liverpool 2
New contianer terminal is being built at the Port of Liverpool.
The idea is to build a deep water quay on the river Mersey and will cost £300 million
The project will almost double the ports capacity to 1.5 million containers a year, this will enable it to compete with the UK's biggest ports

Airports
The airport commission published in 2015 a report recommending the expansion of UK airports, to help economic prosperity.
This is controversial as people living near airports don't like the noise and some may lose their homes to make room for the new airport.
A new runway at Heathrow has been proposed
It is believed to generate £147 billion over the next 60 years
Create 70,000 new jobs by 2050
Flight will run to 40 new destinations
The scheme will cost £18.6 billion
It has been largely backed by business groups, however some special interest groups are concerned of air and noise pollution generated by the new runway
They are considering a ban on night time flights and a guarantee on no 4th runway to be built
There also a planned new runway at Gatwick costing £9.3 billion
There is also a plan to increase the length of one of the runways at Heathrow costing £18.6 billion
