Environmental implications of fossil fuel obtention
Carbon dioxide emissions from burning coal account for 44% of the world total, and it's the biggest single source of the global temperature increase above pre-industrial levels.
Pollution, land degradation, asthma,
cancer and sea level rise are some
In order to achieve fuel
Coal mining
Causes mountaintop
removal, land subsidence
water damage and air pollution
Underground mining
Job site accidents, black lung disease
water pollution, fires and land subsidence
Petrolleum conforms about one third ofthe global emissions of the global total. Air pollution releasing, Exxon Valdez Spill, Deepwater Horizon Disaster, Lac Megantic, and thousands of pipelines accidents are also parte of the consequences.
What is it? It is decomposing plants and other elements that have taken lots of years to become carbon-rich deposits, and this is called, fossil fuel. They are non-renewable fuels, and they include coil, oil and natural gases. Witch supply around 80% of the world´s energy.
How does it affects?when fossils fuels are burned, they release carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases, and this has affected the planet in aspects of global warning and climate change.
The countries that use more are China, United States, and India.
Wildlife habitats end up fragmented
or destroyed
Coal-fired power plants generate
42% of mercury emissions and 2/3
of the sulfur emissions in the US
At the international level, countries have committed to emissions reduction targets as part of the 2015 Paris Agreement, while other entities, have made their own commitments.
They produce smog: poisonous carbon monoxide
and nitrogen oxide caused by fossil fuel-powered
vehicles and transportation methods.
Transporting coal produces coal dust
causing serious cardiovascular
and respiratory risks
Natural gas leaks caused the largest methane
emission (94,500 tons) between October 2015
and February 2016
Oil,being transported across the ocean,
poses a risk of oil spills
2011 ExxonMobil spilled 10
barrels into Montana´s
Yellowstone river
Petroleum industry is an important part of mexican economy, but the soils of the states that contribute the most (Tabasco, Veracruz, Chiapas, Tamaulipas and Puebla) have been severely damaged and are left useless for other types of activities. In the fishing industry, reduces quality due to water pollution.
Two main methods for removing from the ground: mining and drilling.
Drilling: (hole drilled through rocks, layers and materials so they can access oil or gas). Naturally dissolved oils, hydrocarbons and radioactive material, innappropriate for human consumption. Requires enormous amount of water (3-6 million gallons of water)
SURFACE MINING: removing overlaying coal in order to access the coal below. Short term Damage: Volumes of rock and soil dumped into valleys and streams, altering ecosystems. Long term damage: removal sites are left with poor soil, health and safety of surrounding communities. Mountain top removal involves destroying all trees and other vegetation
