Do Good Explanations Have to Be True?
Initial Response
Yes
explanations are meant to describe and explain something and are inherently meant to describe what is closest to the truth
explanations in AOKs
Human Sciences
Sometimes it is impossible to verify if something is true, so in this case a good explanation only has to be true to the best of the knowledge provided
Hard Sciences
In hard sciences, it is easier to get closer to the truth. Without knowing the truth for certain, a good explanation has to be true to the available knowledge. when new knowledge becomes available that contradicts the explanation, it is not longer a good explanation
Art
In art, the truth of the meaning of art pieces is more personal, especially if one follows the personal perspective POV. So long as the explanation lines up with given facts, it can be a good explanation
Role of truth in AOKS
Human sciences
In human sciences, certainty in knowledge is more difficult to attain, and facts can be aligned or disputed in ways that aren't like the hard sciences. In this case, what is true is not a given, and generally what is accepted as true are things to are strongly supported, even if not certain.
Hard Sciences
Hard sciences also have room for different interpretations. However, because of the nature of the scientific process (where certainty still isn't possible, but we can reasonably support certain facts) the boundaries of facts and knowledge are greater, limiting the range of explanations and pointing towards a single or vary limited range of truths.
Arts
Truth is more flexible in art. Due to the inability to be certain of the authors intention or your own experiences. the truth of meaning behind are is far more personal, as the knowledge that needs to be implemented is both more limited and exclusive to individuals and their interpretation.
Real-world examples that relate
If you have know clue about microbes, miasma theory is a good explanation. Now that people understand microbes and what causes diseases, miasma theory is no longer a good explanation as it fails to incorporate or explain new knowledge.
