What is the Non-cooperation movement

Cause of Failure

The Non-cooperation movement was launched on 5th September 1920 by Mahatma Gandhi with the aim of self-governance and obtaining full independence from the British empire

The reason was because the people were not ready for a non-violent movement, when Bhagat singh said that we need to fight for our nation.

The Indian National Congress officially called off the Non-Cooperation movement on February 12th 1922

After this incident, Gandhiji himself called off the movement since he wanted it to be non-violent.

Also, the mob burned down the police station killing 23 police officers.

On February 1st, 1922, an angry mob killed British officers by lighting a police station on fire in Chauri Chaura

Impact on the people

Value of foreign imports reduced to half

British understood the Indians could participate in national movements in unity and their old divide and rule policy will not work

Many new trades and manufactures grew up

Unity in diversity especially in religions increased

Gave boost to Indian textile industries

People had to resign from their government jobs. People were asked to withdraw their children from government-controlled or aided schools and colleges.

It was also because of the Rowlatt Act and the Khilafat Agitation

But then the non-violent movement idea by MK Gandhi sparked people's minds and they started this movement for a second try with no violence.
