Pre-Assessment Strategies By Meredith Monke
5 Students Who Answered Most
Initial Strategy / Task
~ (1)
Create a story
: Students who have already been exposed to many stories featuring kings and queens can create their own story featuring a royal family. First have them map out the characters, setting, and plot (including the problem that will come up!). (2)
Recite a poem
: Having to memorize and recite a poem on kings & queens to the class will challenge in public speaking and in memorization skills. Choose different length poems depending on the level of challenge needed for a student.
Further Assessment / Monitoring
Self-assessment - have students fill out their own KWL chart to assess what they have learned and still want to learn
Picture interpretation - have students look at a picture that features kings & queens and make their own predictions about it; look out for which vocabulary words they use & what knowledge they use when making their explanation
12 Students Who Have Some Knowledge But Need to Develop Higher Order Thinking Skills
Initial Strategy / Task
~ (1)
Compare & Contrast
: Have students choose two stories featuring kings & queens (two can be pre-selected if students need additional guidance) and have them create a Venn diagram that compares and contrasts the two stories. What about kings and queens is the same in both stories? (2)
Sequencing
: Have students work in groups to sequence a story on kings & queens to practice identifying the beginning, middle, and end of a story, as well as cause and effect. Students can either be given photos to sort in the correct order or they can draw their own pictures as a challenge.
Further Assessment / Monitoring
Four corners inquiry - use to assess students' knowledge
Smiley/Sad face cards - ask students questions regarding the text and have them answer with the smiley face or sad face
5 Students With Limited Knowledge
3 Struggling with Language
Initial Strategy / Task
~ (1)
Build Vocabulary
: Have students go on a kings & queens word scavenger hunt in either a picture book or from the KWL chart. In a small group, help students sound out words (and assist with spelling as needed), explain the meanings of the words, and have students draw pictures that represent the words' meanings. (2)
Rhyming
: Learning to identify and produce rhyming words can be challenging for ELL students. Read short and easy rhyming poems but stop before finishing the line to see if they can identify the correct rhyming word that belongs.
Further Assessment / Monitoring
Rhyming matching activity - match two pictures that rhyme
Vocabulary quiz - name a word and have students draw a picture of that word
Memorize a poem - work particularly on rhythm for ELL students
2 With Little to No Comprehension of the Topic / Need to Be Tested for Special Needs
Initial Strategy / Task
~ (1)
Build Vocabulary
: See above. (2)
Build Content Knowledge
: Have students engage in various content building activities; additional picture books can be read to them or they can watch YouTube clips that help build their understanding of kings & queens. For more experiential/kinesthetic students, costumes and props can be provided and they can act out a story or scene from a video.
Further Assessment / Monitoring
Create a graphic organizer with content learned (example: things you'd find in a castle)
Read a story on kings & queens and ask students to make a prediction; ask why they made that prediction and guide them to answer with the knowledge they've gained about kings & queens
Act out a play featuring kings & queens that answers the following questions: what do kings/queens do during the day? what are they in charge of? where do they live?
Purpose of Pre-Assessment
: Assessing students on their knowledge of kings & queens, as well as their rhyming skills and ability to discuss various literary elements of a story.
