A Pre-Assessment based Grade 8
Differentiation Strategy
for ELA
LEVEL 3: Students who
answered most questions correctly
Activities:
Mini Research Project: What is an idiom? What is foreshadowing? (These are higher level terms that will not be discussed in Grade 8).
Poetry Maps (with group): Students will create "maps" of a poem by highlighting similes, circling metaphors and so on. They will have to include a paragraph to describe what their "map" tells them about the piece of writing.
Analyzing: Choice Activity. Students will choose a piece of literature (or a song) that interests them and will brainstorm what it means.
Tracking progress:
Self reflections will be conducted and students must expain what they learned that day.
Teacher will review "maps" and mini projects and will provide feedback.
A quarter portfolio can also be used to store work and allow teacher to provide ongoing feedback.
LEVEL 2: Students who have
some knowledge about the topic but need to develop higher order thinking
Tracking: progress
Teacher will review Edpuzzle results and Flipgrid submissions.
Teacher will assign a re-assessment to determine if students have better mastery of figuratve language.
Activities:
Figurative language review game: Guess the Meaning! Students will be presented with a sentence and a picture of a simile, metaphor, etc. Students must take turns guessing the meaning.
Other game options
are possible.
In your own words: Students will work together to define a certain set of terms (those most difficult for members of the group). They will decide on a definition and example of the term that helps them to remember the meaning. They will each take turns, using the "script" they created, recording a flipgrid response. This will become a tool for the whole class to use!
Edpuzzle video (independently done).
LEVEL 1: Students who have
limited knowledge about the topic
Tracking progress:
Teacher will collect ongoing exit ticket results and continue with flexible grouping throughout the Quarter.
Teacher will reassign original pre-assment with some wording changed to see students' progress.
Teacher will review results of Nearpod lesson.
Teacher will sit in on group discussions and lead the guided reading activity.
Activities:
Nearpod lesson (with video) to reintroduce the topic of figurative language.
Guided poetry reading (with the teacher) to frontload upcoming material.
Flashcard practice (with a partner). Students will quiz each other on the terms and their definitions.
Figurative Language Posters (with their group). Students will include the term, a defintion and a picture on their visual aids.
*Especially helpful for ELLs and Special Needs students.
When appropriate, these students may be asked only to complete one part of the poster. For example, only draw a picture or write a sentence.
This differenciation strategy identifies students in three levels of academic readiness
