City State: A city-state is made up of a city and the surrounding countryside that controls it. It is independent of other cities. Each ancient Greek city developed its own style of government, its own laws, and built up its own army.
Tyrants: are rulers who take power and rule in a harsh, cruel way. :
Metic: Metics were people who lived in Athens who had been born outside the city-state. They were not allowed to own land and could not become citizens.
Slave: people who were owned either by private Athenians or by the city-state. They could not become citizens.
Citizen: parents were born in Athens. Male, had to finish military service. Following service, at age 20, male citizens could participate in voting and governing the city.
