There is an amino group, a carboxyl group, a hydrogen atom and an R group.
Proteins are also structural as they are the main component of body tissues such as muscle, skin, ligaments and hair.
Proteins have a wide range of biological roles. Proteins are catalytic, as all enzymes are proteins and are immunological as all antibodies are proteins.
Proteins are contractile and good for storage, transport and signalling as hormones and receptors.
Amino acid monomers combine to form a dipeptide, containing a peptide bond, by a condensation reaction. Polypeptides are formed by the condensation of many amino acids.
