Methods of identification
Specific cases in my classroom and strategies used
ADHD
Clear, concise instructions
Break tasks into manageable pieces
Give them classroom responsibilities as a "Little Teacher"
Use i-pads and/or computers to maintain motivation
Seat them where there is limited visual distraction, preferably next to diligent classmates.
Positive reinforcement and feedback
As sitting for long periods is difficult, consider allowing them to stand or move around in a non-disruptive way.
Allow regular break times

Remedial students-no specific diagnosis, but low academic performance
Process
Step 1: Administrators request teachers`
recommendations for remedial program.
Step 2: Teachers select students based on academic achievements.
Step 3: Parents are notified about teachers` recommendations
Step 4: If parents agree, students attend remedial classes after school
Step 5: Student progress is monitored and assessed
If parents disagree, then students are given extra support by teachers and TAs in break times.
My desired approach
Engage in constant communication with parents, teachers, co-teachers, and counsellors.
Foster an environment of empathy in the classroom.
Get to know the students as individuals
Make every interaction positive
Follow the official process of the school
Amend my teaching according to the needs of the student.
Keep current with strategies to assist special learners.
The process at my school for special needs students
Step 3: School counsellor observes and evaluates.
Step 4: Teachers, school counsellors, and parents consult and decide strategies to implement.
Step 5: Implementation of strategies and further observation is done.
Step 2: Teacher submits documentation to school counsellor for observation
Step 6: Evaluation of the student and the effectiveness of the strategies implemented.
Step 1: Identify the special need
Has the intervention been successful?
Yes
Continue applying the same strategies and reassess regularly.
No
