How to use pre-assessment to differentiate instruction?
Students who answered most, including the most difficult, of the pre-assessment questions correctly
Extension and higher thinking activities will be assigned
Given project related to the topic and allowed to pursue own interests
Given creative activities to evaluate and synthesize information
Anecdotal formative assessment as they progress through unit. For example observation of project work.
Essay-based summative assessment
Students who have some knowledge about the topic as shown in their score, but need to develop higher order thinking skills
Whole class direct teaching used initially to explain topic and clear up any doubts they may have.
Students then assigned group-based guided practice
Group-based project assigned to emphasis on critical thinking skills.
Multiple formative assessment checks used, such as exit tickets and Kahoot quizzes.
Summative assessment project-based, and with selected-response test.
Students who appear to have limited knowledge about the topic
Students who have little to no comprehension of the the topic and need to be tested further for special needs
Administer testing to determine which support the students require
If struggling with a speech or language impairment, arrange for appropriate assistive technology to be provided.
Organise for material to be presented orally or visually depending on the student's needs
Modify formative and summative assessment to ensure the student's needs are accounted for
If a cognitive difficulty arrange for the appropriate support.
Scaffold and break the subject up into smaller chunks
Provide extra time and adapted formative and summative assessment. Fewer questions and less importance given to them.
ELLs who are struggling with language and are at different reading levels
Graphic organisers and visuals provided to allow them to make sense of the vocabulary used.
Formative assessment given through learning checks such as questions, and informal quizzes.
Summative assessment through a conference to assess primarily their oral comprehension
Levelled simplified readings given to them to explain the topic at their levels of understanding.
Small group teaching provided in conjunction with the ESL teacher.
