He got into Ellingham with his book that he wrote, even though he said that he doesn't like writing his book.
In a way he was a sort of sidekick for the protagonist (Stevie) as he helped her both with writing the script for Hayes and solving the "case".
Stevie Bell

She is the protagonist of the book and we follow her as the mystery gets solvefd,
Throughout the book, there seems to be someone determined to stop her as there have been incidents such as when the truly devious letter was projected on her wall at midnight.
Element Walker
She (along with David) was also a second year, interested in art.
She (at the end of the book) was a suspect for both projecting the Truly Devious letter and the murder of Hayes Major because she was revealed to have written the series that he claimed to have created, giving her a motive.

David Eastman
He was a second year in the academy and (kind of) has a crush on Stevie, whom he helped convince her parents to let her stay at Ellingham.
He was revealed to have been Edward King's son the whole time (whom Stevie has expressed hatred to).
Hayes Major
He was murdered in the tunnel where he had planned to shoot a new youtube series about the Ellingham murders by a carbon overdose from dry ice in that tunnel.
His death was investigated by Stevie who was the only person who thought it wasn't an accident or suicide.

In the 1930s, the infamous Albert Ellingham opened the school for those who were either supremely gifted or are rich enough to afford the price where the rules are just that, learning is a game.
Later, trouble struck when his wife and daughter never returned from their drive, he gave out huge sums of his fortune only for them to be revealed to be dead. Alice was never found but Iris's body washed up on a shore. it was unknown who did this until the second installment.
