PRESENT CONTINUOUS
USE
To describe an action that is currently taking place.
Grammar Structure
The structure of the present continuous is: subject + auxiliary "to be" + verb root + ing.
RULES
1: When it is with To, it is an infinitive verb.
For example: TO FEEL/ FEELING
TO GO/ GOING
TO WORK/ WORKING
TO READ/ READING
2: Verbs ending in (e) are replaced by (ing).
For example: LIVE/ LIVING
HAVE/ HAVING
MAKE/ MAKING
3: Verbs ending in consonant + vowel + consonant are doubled to the consonant.
For example: TO SIT/ SITTING
TO STOP/ STOPPING
TO GET/ GETTING
TO PLAN/ PLANNING
4: Verbs ending in consonant + vowel + consonant are not duplicated.
For example: TO HAPPEN/ HAPPENING
TO ENTER/ ENTERING
TO OFFER/ OFFERING
5: Verbs ending in (w, x, y) are augmented (ing).
For example: TO FIX/ FIXING
TO ENJOY/ ENJOYING
TO SNOW/ SNOWING
6: Verbs ending in (ie) are changed to (y-ing).
For example: TO LIE/ LYING
TO DIE/ DYING
TO TIE/ TYING
7: Verbs ending in (L) are augmented (ing).
For example: TO TRAVEL/ TRAVELING
TO MARVEL/ MARVELING
8: Verbs that end in (R) are doubled by (rr).
For example. TO REFER/ REFERRING
