My Personal Process for Struggling Students
Elizabeth Higtower
1. Meeting Students at Open Day
1A. Initial Assessments First Month
I assess phonics that they will be learning/have already learned based on the brown book assesments.
This is the first time meeting a student.
Both the assistants and the teacher are able to talk to the students and parents.
1B. Making Notes During first two weeks Review
Note Students Who Didn't meet the : : benchmarks from last term
Take small groups to check if student does struggle
Adjust small groups based on progress made by students.
Monthly Assessments to note progress in learning.
I assess: sight words learned, phonics sounds, reading skills. This is sent home to parents during end of month comments.
Adjust lesson plan for all students
Our syllabus includes 12 weeks for review. This allows me to slow the pace to meet all students needs.
Mid term open house and PTM
This allows me to meet with parents 1:1 to discuss students needs and give advice for at home help as well as goals that parents have their kids (international school, study aboard, etc.
End of term assessment.
We assess social, cognitive, social/emotional, phonics, reading, arts, music, etc.
This shows if there is any improvement from the beginning of the term to end of first and final term. Ideally seeing improvement
Adjust small groups and goals as needed
Meeting with Parents as needed
Independent research to help students with special needs
Some students are shy when in larger groups. Some are in need of different instructions.
Put students into small groups based off of first month results. These are based on colors so students don't need to feel embarrassed by numbers.
Some students are going back to learn ABCS, some handwriting skills, some are learning more advance phonics/reading skills
Red Group
Strong skills with phonics, needs more help with blending longer sounds
Yellow Group
Needs more help with cognitive skills. Poor handwriting skills, low fine motor skills
Green Group
Has high level reading/phonics. Already knows the new phonics sounds for Eagles. Learning to read longer words and more sight words
Blue Group
Low phonics. Isn't able to meet the benchmarks for lower classes. Needs more remedial instructions.
Meet with previous teachers to discuss what the student struggled with.
This includes academic, social/emotional, cognitive, and physical development
