Does it lift school standards?
Does it lift house prices?
Does it cost a teacher more to live near their job if their school is outstanding?
Cause, correlation, perpetuate, disparity
afluent neighborhood = better schools = better OFSTED scores / correlate with higher house prices
provide a better education than poorer communities
buy more supplies / better resources / hire better teachers / more ECAs
students outcomes -> incomes, further education
benefit from cultural capital (higher income parents spend more time reading with kids etc.)
demographic differences
e.g. gender / age
JC example of estate agents making assumptions about race and where to live
Timescales to see uplift / lag
Would people move if a school gets worse?
Do better schools correlate with higher house prices?
If a school gets bad do transaction volumes increase?
Is school more important to families than any other criteria?
Variables
School grades
Population density
Distance from competitor schools
wealth demographics
Household income
Primary/Junior versus Secondary/senior
ignore private schools
state/academies
how is school funding determined/?
local level? council? central government?
Does it come from council taxes?
expenditure per student
urban/rural
city centres - since density and #transactions
old & new properties or just old?
Last distance offered criteria
OFSTED regions
small towns - no choice of schools eg. WB
ripple effect - not all rises at the same time in a cycle
Areas with schools that have little/ no change would be your control sample
areas with schools that consistently maintain high scores? Do house prices increase at a faster rate?
Survey methods
Quantatitive
Big data analysis
Correlational research
Is it possible to quantify how much it contributes to change?
Land registry data
House price data by postcode
OFSTED data
school grades - historical and current
National pupil database
average distance from school - 70% (80%,90%)
Look for validated scales
Or create a scale
Surveys
Previous purchasers
Renters
Landlords
Qualatitive
Interviews - WHO?
Estate agents
Teachers
Mumsnet
current purchasers/searchers
landlords
-neg: case study idea - Look in more detail at 10 specific schools - that are outliers
Criteria
within 1,000m of the school
existing housing stock (not new)
Research design/methodology
Choosing geographic areas
Region
County, local auhtority
District, borough
Postcode area (SN)
Postcode destrict (SN1)
Postcode sector (SN1 2)
LSOA / postcodes
Aim to contribute to existing knowledge
Property Hub / investors
Schools, local councils and DfE
Compare vs old data if historic studies
Implications to:
urban planning
community planning
housing needs
Current assumptions
Schooling is important to parents and therefore if and when a family moves house, they would a. consider the school catchments, b. choosing property within catchments of better schools. c. this increases demand and therefore in theory of supply and demand drives up prices.
Not known - how much does a school impact on price of property in the catchment? Is it possible to quantify?
Schools are important - how important?
Is it possible to express the value of a property in an equation? With quality of local schooling a factor?
wealthier kids tend to live in higher income neighborhoods, which in turn fund better quality schools
