Body
Theory in the Flesh: Chicana Feminist Research Methodology that says everything we know and understand is because our memories and our trauma are stored inside of our body and shape the way we view the outside world
Bodies Need Rest: Arriving to the understanding that bodies needs rest. This is very opposite of how we're directed to act in a capitalist society.
Spaces for Bodies: Envisioning spaces that allow humans to be humans. What can belonging to our bodies look like? What does it look like to design spaces where we welcome people's experiences, trauma, and human emotions.
Identity
Identity is created when we no longer feel like we have to negotiate parts of our being away in order to fit in with a group of people or into a certain space
-
Identity is created when we disrupt and challenge the status quo because it challenges our core being
Spaces
Spaces of Belonging: Spaces of belonging are spaces where we receive affirmations that we belong within the space. This includes affirmation that our bodies, both physical and spiritual, our values, our ideas, and our experiences are welcome.
Spaces of Belonging value reflection as a tool for learning. Intentionally holds space for reflection.
Personal Example: Designing a Space of Belonging in Cities and Racial Formation Class. Designed a presentation and activity around the book Spatializing Blackness. Included several self-care reminders, breaks for reflection, content warnings, and reminders that all student voices were valued in discussion.
Personal Note: I often imagined designing for Spaces of Belonging as I moved throughout this project. I imagine them as moving beyond safe spaces and what safe spaces offer us, like the new frontier of a safe space.
As we normalize emotional safety in more than just designated spaces, I think we'll begin to see more spaces of belonging. And if we can embody Spaces of Belonging we can bring these spaces with us wherever we go.

Envisioning Utopia
Prioritizes Radical Care for self and others. Prioritize care for self is not the same as putting the self first. It's a way to care for the self in order to fill up one's cup and be able to care for others
Belonging
Belonging to Self: Understanding that we can't truly belong anywhere until we fully belong to ourselves.
Belonging to Self is no walk in the park! This is hard work and is an opportunity for Designing Practices that affirm this belonging.
When we belong to ourselves first, we can put ego aside. This helps us achieve the goal of greater good for all.
Methods
Literature Review: Chicana feminism, design spaces, design ethics, racial formations, power dynamics
Zine Creation: allowed be to build community and visualize my thoughts as worthy of publishing. Acted as a tool of self-empowerment.
Building Community: Through talks, verbal reflections and idea sharing.
Therapy: Not a traditional methodology, but integral to this project!
Journaling writing down reflections about conversations, experiences, readings, and just about anything else that came to mind.
Prioritizes spaces of belonging and the wellbeing of the collective society over industry, consumerism, individualism. However, Belonging to Self is still required in a Space of Belonging as this informs our core individual beliefs. Meaning, we're not blindly the putting collective before ourselves, we're doing so intentionally.

Belonging to Self informs Identity and is an act of radical self-care, which is necessary to find strength in the fight for the greater good of all. We can't achieve a utopia or spaces of belonging until we all have equal rights. The fight for equal rights requires radical care in order to get there.
