What is Gender?
Marshall Davis-Jones' poem "The Correct spelling of Father" addresses the topics of language gender, and Culture.
"you can save your sorry apologies
because you must mean “in-correct”
as in within the parameters of being right.
let me explain something to you
cuz obviously you aint grow up
where poppas are rolling stones
down the hills of women’s backsides
and when he’s gone
all he’s left us
was alone"
-
"my father, walked a daily nightmare
so that I may live out my dreams
my father watered me
with blood sweat and tears
so that I may be ripe
for the harvest
and I hope that one day
I can grow up to be as great a father
as she was for me"
Most individuals my age know what kind of abuses of power are going on in the workplace but I assume that the audience for the text is society as a whole. It's for everybody, to acknowledge and expose. I think the author used the article as a possibility for change. People who read newspapers, I think are a little more old-fashioned and have certain views that are possibly out of date. I also recognize that readers of the New York Times are often either older and keep up with the news and newspapers. Based on Chira’s writing I can infer that the audience is aware that the newer generation has very different beliefs from the older ones, and it is time to make changes.

"Women as well as men can wield the weapon of sexuality in the workplace—as I saw in months of interviews about sexual harassment at two Ford plants in Chicago. In that case, in addition to persistent abuse by men, several women were also accused of trading sex for better, less physically demanding jobs. Whether women were coerced into sex or gaminga one constant has been that in most cases, men are supervisors and have the power to dispense threats or favors. "
"each abused in their own ways. Although statistics are spotty, some studies have concluded that sexual harassment is more regular and severe in traditionally male occupations."

“By the third week of nursery school. Henry's teacher would be sending notes home that Henry “had another hard day today.” He was disruptive during circle time. By mid-year, there’d be sly little hints dropped that maybe henry's parents should think about medication for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Many of the other boys are on it and they find school much easier.”
"so get your encyclopedias,
show me your flash cards
open your dictionary
cuz what webster says
means nothing around here"
Why I want a wife
" I want a wife who will not bother me with rambling complaints about a wife's duties. But I want a wife who will listen to me..."
"If, by chance, I find another person more suitable as a wife than the wife I already have, I want the liberty to replace my present wife with another one."
"I want a wife who will take care of my physical needs. I want a wife who will keep my house clean."

"I identify to belong. I disidentify to escape racism, to avoid the structures that oppress black men. But I also disidentify to retaliate against black men—to punish them for what I perceive as their efforts to disown me."
"And not only do I feel as if my racial performance is judged, but I know my gender performance is too. Because the barbershop is a masculine space, the performance of heterosexuality is the gold standard. Talking sufficiently black is not enough for me to be heard; I must also speak and act acceptably masculine."
"I both identify with their predicament and dis identify with it because I am and am not exactly one of them, and both do and do not want to be."
