Differentiation Strategy: Topic: Understanding Mammals vs birds: Third Grade
'Approaching': The horse group : 12 students who have some knowledge about the topic as shown in their score, but need to develop higher order thinking skills
Core Task
In groups of 3: Mammal and bird picture cards will be available on the table. Students are to pick one and write/draw (label) down everything they can see from the picture. Identify the different parts of the animal and what they do. Connect with a partner to share and discuss the similarities and differences between the animals.
If finished early: there will be a
Things to Do Chart
that students may view on the board to see what they can do next.
Flamingo students will be directed to the computer where they can solidify their skills using this
presentation
. This will be an individual learning activity. Students are to add anything new that they learn or think of during the slideshow to their poster that they've been creating.
The horse group will do the 'draw and guess the animal' activity that the flamingo group was originally doing. They should now have 3 animals total that they have drawn/talked/written about. (one from the core task and two from the extended task)
Flamingo and horse group can come together and make a Venn diagram that compares all the similarities and differences of each students animal.
Extra Support: 5 students who appear to have limited knowledge about the topic, of which 3 are struggling with language and are at different reading levels and 2 students who have little to no comprehension of the the topic and need to be tested further for special needs
Modified task
Group of 3 students: The cat group (potentially ESL or ELL) will be with the teaching assistant. The two other students: The dog group: (possibly special needs) will be with the main teacher. Mammal and bird stuffed animals will be available for these students to pick. They can orally tell the teacher about the animal or draw/write about the animal. The teacher/TA can draw for them if needed. These can be small details like colour/sound/how many legs the animal has. This will provide a hands on experience for the student. The TA will take the cat group away to a quiet classroom/area to focus. After 15 minutes, the TA and teacher will switch groups.
After the switch, the TA and teacher will begin to work with the students to achieve the 'core task'
Above average:The flamingo group: 5 students who answered most, including the most difficult, of the pre-assessment questions correctly
Extended Task
Students will sit in a circle and the person on the right will draw for the person sitting to their right. They will describe an animal to a friend. The friend will draw what they hear and try to guess what the animal is from the descriptions and their drawing; drawings should include labels, colours, and a few sentences about the animal. Students are to draw one mammal and one bird (2 posters total)
Students are to fill out this rubric for their peer

Tracking the progress: Students will be familiar with I-Pad's at this point. They will be instructed to take a picture of their work after each task/activity. The teacher will be able to compare the pictures to see what was added or taken away after students consulted with each other/tried new activities. The teacher will also collect rubrics from the peer evaluation activity. If students do not like what their peer rated them, they are allowed to try again and have a second classmate rate them.
