Pre-Assessment for Differentiation -
3rd Grade Character Traits Lesson by Keren Tian
Pre-assessment: Watch the Edpuzzle video on Seesaw and answer the questions of the two characters (about their external and internal traits):
What do you see?
What did the character say?
What did the character feel and why?
What do you know about the character's personality and why?
Character
12 students who have some knowledge about the topic as shown in their score, but need to develop higher order thinking skills
Work in pair and acting out:
Work in pair and describe the character traits by using text clues. Then choose a scenario, role play and act out to show the character traits:

Think-pair-share:

Students are encouraged to give their own examples of different character traits:
Work in pair, create

and think about how can you tell a character is ambitious/generous/demanding/daring etc.
Analyze How the Same Character Traits are Demonstrated Across Different Stories:
Students will read 16 short stories and then sort the stories by determining which of the five given character traits are best exhibited by the main character. It helps the students analyze how character traits can be demonstrated in different ways.

Peer coaching: Students will be also supported by their peers that they will review and hear the content by another person in the classroom they trust. Also, students will show leadership and mentorship skills when helping others.

Graphic organizers
Audiobooks and digital Text-to-speech books
Students can read audio books, digital Text-to-speech books on EPIC! and Raz Kids by their reading levels. They can read fiction books and practice identifying character by making stop&jots in their reading journal.
Dictionaries and thesauri: Students can look up character trait vocabulary and words they don’t understand when reading. A picture dictionary is a popular tool that uses images to define words. And a talking dictionary reads definitions aloud. Dictionaries also help students to translate the words into their home language.
