Topic 3.4.4: The Persecution of Minorities
THE NAZI RACIAL HIERARCHY
The ‘Herrenvolk’ (‘master race’)
They were tall and athletic. They were strong and able to work very hard.
These were the most important people in Germany. They needed to preserve their racial purity by only having children with other Aryans. This ‘selective breeding’ programme would mean a strong, healthy ‘master race’.
The ‘master race’ was a group of ‘racially pure’ people. You could tell them because they had blonde hair and blue eyes.
Mixed relationships were not allowed. Particularly, the Herrenvolk should not breed with any Untermensch.
Some Germans fitted into this group.
Ordinary German citizens
These German citizens had no specific role from a racial perspective. There was no discrimination against them, but they were considered less important for the future of Germany
They were not racially pure, because their relatives had previously had relationships with the inferior racial groups.
Many Germans fitted into this group.
The ‘Untermenschen’ (‘sub-humans)
