Language Assessment in Practice
What is assessment?
The outcome(s) that come from the process of collecting information. The variety to do so is wide, going from observation and interviews to audio recording and scoring. In LA, the intention is to interpretate language ability.
Two qualities- systematicity (defined methodical procedures for replication) and substantive grounding (based on recognized and verifiable content for meaningfull interpretation).
What is evaluation?
One of the many uses for assessment. It is based on decision making and valoration of the tasks performed by the student.
Macroevaluation

Macroevaluations are made on programs, when we make decisions about existing teaching programs or implement new ones, we call those macroevaluations.
Microevaluation
Microevaluations are made on individuals, when we make decisions about placement, passing, failling or selection, we call those microevaluations.
Uses for assessment
To collect information in order to make decisions, and such decisions will have consequences. The uses and intentions of LA need to be justified.
Consequences
Developers should make decisions in order to promote beneficial consequences; however, there can be too unintended or unknown consequences. It is important to try to minimize the possibility that these last ones will happen.
The information from assessments may also be used as feedback for users to make decisions about their own learning.
When and how do we assess?
We asses whenever we have to make decisions based on our students' needs, feelings, achievements and contexts when it comes to language learning.
We also asses to measure the effectiveness of our teaching methodologies.
When applied to the classroom, our assessments can be either implicit or explicit. In the former both actors (teacher and student) may be unaware of the cyclical assessment they are collecting. In the latter, both parts are aware and the process distinguish itself from the teaching practice.
