Stimuli & Response in Plant
Definition of TROPISM
A DIRECTIONAL response of plant to STIMULI such as light, water, gravity & touch
Positive Tropism
The part of the plant grows TOWARDS a stimulus
Negative Tropism
The part of the plant grows AWAY from a stimulus
Types of TROPISM
Phototropism - stimuli to LIGHT
Hydrotropism - stimuli to WATER
Thigmotropism - stimuli to TOUCH
Geotropism - stimuli to GRAVITY
Nastic movement
Response TOWARDS a stimulus WITHOUT depends on the DIRECTION
Example: Roots move towards water instead of gravity
Function / Significant of the tropism to the plant
SHOOTS (Leaves) - show POSITIVE PHOTOTROPISM
ROOTS - show POSITIVE HYDROTROPISM
ROOTS - show POSITIVE GEOTROPISM
TENDRILS / TWINING STEMS - show POSITIVE THIGMOTROPISM
