Labels are a necessity in the organization of knowledge, but they also constrain our understanding. Answer with reference to two areas of knowledge
What?
Labels = Words or thoughts used to describe something; everything in our society today is labeled one way or another
Knowledge = Facts or information acquired by someone through education or experiences; education being heavily dependent upon labels, our knowledge may be influenced by it?
The relationship labels have with us obtaining information + restricting our intake of information; acting as a savior + curse
-
Constrain = Keeping away information or something from someone; constraining knowledge might have to do with us being lied to or information not being revealed for what it's truly worth?
-
Different AOK's having different views of what labels are as well as different definitions of knowledge and one's understanding
What do they mean by necessity? Necessity = A MUST, are labels the foundation of our society? What keeps us grounded?
How?
AOK
Religion
As ambiguous as it mays seem, people are labeled based off of their nationalities and from that, different organizations of our knowledge are present (correlating people's personalities + beliefs to religion)
Our understanding of religion is solemnly base off of labels whether that is religions itself (Islam Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, etc...) to religious books (Bible, Quran) and religious institutions (mosques, synagogues)
Because religion is seen as taboo subject/topic, our understanding of its beliefs and faiths are unknown to an extent (if you are from a certain religion, you won't take interest in another or if you are an atheist) and therefore constrain our understanding of such labels; e.g stereotypes surrounding religions
To understand religion is to label it to a certain extent, where anyone from any other religion / an atheist can understand; yet, also constrains knowledge as labels aren't 100% true (can hide info)
Human Science
Fields within this AOK are all labeled and have labels to furthermore understand their fields of study and in doing so, organize knowledge for us as what we learn from these fields of studies are all from labels; e.g anthropology and learning about theories such as "habitus"
Our knowledge is nevertheless constrained through what they represent and embody in regards to different fields of study within this AOK: human sciences naturally being ambiguous and objective as well as intellectual, different labels may come up to describe same event/aspect/ideology, based off of what you're studying + environment in which you live ini
Humans studying humans; we label everything that is around us and from those labels, are able to benefit from it or use it in our advantage
Labels seen as a necessity as without it, no knowledge is there and regarding this AOK, knowledge is the foundation of discussions and our ideas; without knowledge there is no change done whatsoever and a necessity of knowledge would solve such challenges
WOK
Language
Labels being words that we create to attribute to certain things, language is a must
Language being our way of communication, whether it is through gestures or vocabulary, our knowledge revolves around language as what we think or what we acquire as knowledge + forms of understanding is done through language
It can constrain our understanding based off what we hear or understand labels are to be; depending on your environment and lots of other factors such as nationality, what you will hear and be taught will be based of off those factors and henceforth, language in this way can be twisted and manipulative
Can be seen as a twisted + manipulative language and through words and ideas, can organize our knowledge in millions of different ways, while at the same time constraining such forms of knowledge; e.g French Revolution being labelled as a "revolution" because of the ancient regime coming to an end (people overthrowing monarchy) and now citizens being free from monarchy's wrath
Emotion
Labels usually tie up well with this AOK, as depending on the topic at hand or labeled being looked/studied upon, based off of experiences and memories, emotional attachments can be seen
Because our emotions have such a big impact in the way we think and acquire knowledge as individuals, it wouldn't be surprising to think that because of emotions, our knowledge would be constrained; constrained because maybe an emotional attachment is so strong, the individual refuses to believe this or that and chooses to constrain their own knowledge/thought process
Can have positive or negative impacts in regards to our knowledge; because of this, emotion as an AOK can be seen as manipulative and twisted in regards to use acquiring information, as different emotions results in different understandings of knowledge
Making it a necessity for organizing knowledge, emotions play a huge role in terms of how we receive this information and what to do with it; if the knowledge we acquire through labels is seen as wrong, we will try to change it, and if it is seen as right, we will to support it; emotions = heavy attachment to question at hand
