A second goal of the middle phase of family therapy is to link members of the family together in an appropriate manner. Making sure of linkage between individuals (e.g., siblings) whose generational interests and concerns are common is crucial at this time. Similarly, breaking up inappropriate intergenerational coalitions that are formed against other members of the family, while supporting those that are formed for connection, closeness, and growth, is a must (Gladding, page 171).
