Understanding the assessment process in relation to current framework Lo 3 Unit 11 3.2
Why we track children's progress
Practitioners track children's progress to ensure that they don't fall behind on their development.
Children's progress
will also suggest improvements that have to be made to the environment or to the activities. At the same time practitioners will use the information to provide early intervention if children need early support.
This will help to plan the children´s ongoing learning and development and the information gathered will inform the practitioners on the child´s next steps of development. It has a positive impact the development of an individual child or a whole group of children, (Assessments and tracking progress, 2021)
How we track children's progress
We track children progress by gathering information from
Information gathered from talking to the parents and other family members of the child
Observations performed by other practitioners and yourself
Observation and assessments by other professionals
and as by the article form Tracking in the EYFS also form children's comments and trough conversation (Tracking in the EYFS, 2015).
This information can be written or oral. However for assements practitioners will need written evidence as only then the assesment will be correct and in line with the children's early year learning goals.

When we track children's progress
2 year old check
This check will be done between the ages 2 and 3. It provides an overview of the 7 main areas of development and may also highlight strengths and signs of special needs or any specific development needs. It will be done in cooperation with parents and carers and can also highlight support needs at home..
EYFS Profile
This will usually be done before the 30th of June and is a rounded up profile for the teacher. This profile summarises the child's learning and development including information given by specialists if e.g. special needs have been detected. This will help the child's transition to schools and furthermore will support the teacher´s planning (Statutory framework for the early years foundation stage, 2017)
The difference between formative summative assessment
The formative assessment is the assessment of a child's progress by comparing it to a specific goal this is usually informed by the EYFS Development matters and used by the practitioner for planning activities or to set early years learning goals
"Children are confident to try new activities.
they like some activities more than others. They are
confident to speak in a familiar group, will talk about
their ideas, and will choose the resources they need for
their chosen activities. They say when they do or don’t
need help". (Development matter, 2012)
After the child leaves nursery it will then go onto the national curriculum which works in hand with the EYFS to further support the child's development in the best way possible as not all children will be ready for the national curriculum. This will insure the child's development.
The summative assessment is used after a child has reached a specific stage of learning and development and is is then compared to a specific goal or bench mark such as the 2 year olds check or the EYFS profile. (Formative vs Summative, 2020)
