End of the war => no immediate return to usual two-party system => L George still PM of wartime coalition and won elections in 1918
BUT L. George unable to find permanent solutions to problems of peacetime Britain (post-war depression, coal industries) => became unpopular

Conservatives (led by ABL) left => less people than ever bc spilt of the Liberal party (Labour bc the 2nd party in 1922)
Revival of the old tariff reform issue => new general elections a year later => many seats for Labour => formed a gov (James Ramsay MacDonald bc 1st PM) BUT lacked a majority => Baldwin bc PM
