Pre-Assessment for Differentiation
GRADE LEVEL & SUBJECT
: 5th Grade Science
TOPIC
: Space- How the Earth, Moon, and Sun Interact
PRE ASSESMENT
6 "Now I Know" stations will be set up around the room. Students get up from their desk, collect the slip of paper, answer the question, and then return to the station to open the secret envelope. Answers will be collected in the corresponding bins.

GROUPINGS
MOST CORRECT
5 students who answered most, including the most difficult questions correctly.
STATION
: Roll the Dice
Students in this group are given a worksheet and a dice block. The work sheet contains various vocabulary terms- some are from the concept being taught that day, and some are terms not covered in the lesson or ones that will be covered in future lessons. Students roll their dice, and fill in the blank space next to each term depending on what number they roll. For each term, they can either roll a:
1- Define the term
2- Give a synonym & antonym
3- Write a sentence
4- Draw a picture
5- Make a connection
6- Create a question (with the vocab term being the answer)
With their being no answer bank, students are required to think critically to come up with the correct responses for their terms. If they struggle with answering one of the questions, they can phone a friend from their group, who is also working on the activity. Once students are finished, they check their answers on a key at the front of the room. (Activity adapted from

SOME KNOWLEDGE
12 students who have some knowledge but need to develop higher order thinking skills.
STATION
: Dominos
The students at this station are split into pairs (6 groups of 2). Each group is given a set of cut-out domino pieces. They begin by finding the START domino, which on the other side of it has a question. The pair then sorts through the other domino pieces to find the corresponding answer. Once the correct answer is identified, the pair then proceeds with answering the question on the other side of the answer domino. This process is repeated until all dominos are used. When the students are finished, they go to the front of the room to retrieve the answer key and check their answers. The questions on this activity will be a mixture of vocabulary review as well as questions that further the student's thinking on the concept. (Activity adapted from
The Science Duo
)
LIMITED KNOWLEDGE
5 students who appear to have limited knowledge on the topic including 3 ELL learners.
STATION
: "I Have, Who Has?" (with the teacher)
The students at this station are given various cards. Each card has a statement at the top that reads "I Have", with a question at the bottom that reads "Who Has?". For example, one card might say "I have 365 days or one year. Who has 'why seasons occur on earth?'". Students will start by asking their question to the group. If a student thinks they have the corresponding answer, they will raise their hand, make their "I have" statement, and then ask their question on the bottom of their card. As each question is answered, we will stop to review WHY the answer is correct. This activity gives students the chance to actively participate in guessing the correct answer, while also taking the opportunity to review WHY a particular answer is correct. These questions will be concept based, as students who scored below the threshold in this activity will need to primarily focus on understanding the concept. (Activity adapted from
The Science Duo
)
How does this help ELL learners and learners who are falling behind?
Grouping students with the teacher will allow for more one-on-one instruction. As opposed to the other activities, where students work at their own pace and are mostly self-guided, the students in this group work at a slower pace to closely identify the terms and concepts. Each card will have both a written question/answer, AND a photo to help ELL learners. Together, the students will read aloud the questions/answers with the teacher, to really solidify their understanding.

ASSESSMENTS DURING LEARNING
Following the activities, students will demonstrate their learning with a formative assessment at the end of class. This will be an exit ticket, using the "then vs now" format.
Students will submit this via a
Google Form
. The form prompts the students to list "I used to think" and then "Now I think". ELL & IEP students will complete this exit ticket in pairs.
The results will allow the teacher to see where students landed on learning based on their station, and will inform as to what concepts still need to be addressed.
