Is there something as a moral fact?
Key Words
Moral
The right and wrong behind a certain idea — the ethical implications
Assessments on a moral scale, can not be proven conceptually/not based on evidence
Fact
Not an opinion, established and proven
Can be tested — true or false — based on material evidence
Moral Facts
derived from reasoned judgement
Eg. Murder is wrong
For those who believe in moral facts, these act as things on the basis of which they can easily judge someones character
Moral realists, moral realism
Those against moral realism believe that there are not facts, and our morality comes from a place of personal judgement
Eg. "Moe is a good person" is a moral judgement, since this is a morally true statement only true for the one that made this judgement
Methods and Tools
Presence of a gatekeeper (idea of authority) is likely to make it believable and therefore a fact
Since a religious figure, such as the pope, has a position of authority, more people are likely to believe him
Perspectives
Morality is based on the personal evaluation of things/people, so can differ from person to person
What i might think is right, someone else might find wrong
Religious backgrounds play a role in defining what we think is morally correct and incorrect
Due to religious, Indians believe that eating beef is wrong, while Christians don't find it morally incorrect
Optional Theme: Knowledge and Religion
Ethics
Certain religious have ethical codes of conduct, which when not followed lead to severe consequences
A large group of people believe in the same thing (eg. Jains believe in the concept of non-violence) — therefore, could be considered a moral fact
Different religions have different ethical codes (link to perspectives) so this once again leads to moral judgements and not moral facts
