Scope
CPD x 3
Adapted to COVID situation by providing online CPD that reached attendees at the national level - impressed members in other states
-
Survey at the last CPD event allows us to specifically target future topics of interest to our specific ECO members in NSW/ACT
-
Building a database of excellent ECO speakers that can be developed over time (one of the goals of the ECONA committee as a whole)
Student Engagement
Student conference to provide students knowledge on what's not covered by uni curriculum (ran virtually bc COVID) - good publicity; article published in Mivision
-
-
Student virtual clinical placement - a way to overcome COVID restrictions & meet qualification requirements
-
-
Rural and Regional
- Increased accessibility to webinars for regional/rural optometrists (including WAVE conference
-
Regional Buddy System: In the process of liasing with OptomSoc to find out locations of new grads to facilitate local mentor groups
Areas of Improvement
General
CPD event planning - Pre and Post checklist , clearer process/flowchart
-
Communication - Emails, Teams, Document sharing
Database - speaker info, logos, headshots etc
Corporate Engagement
Plan events earlier, set realistic deadlines and stick to them
-
Be more proactive; more events and increase, then keep a constant presence (e.g. through university events, social media)
Have more relatable speakers to ECOs - feedback from our last event was that the attendees felt they preferred to hear from corporate employees rather than employers/management
Collaborate more with other ECONA subcommittees
- student engagement (high % become corporate employees)
- scope (corporate optoms who want to branch out and want a challenge)
- regional (many corporate employees work in regional and rural areas, 3 of 5 of our subcommittee work in these areas)
How to make Corporate Employment as rewarding as possible, and enticing the Corporate employer to be on board with expanding scope
Targeting corporate conglomerates > pitching the ability to improve scope and making them money at the same time
Student Engagement
Direct engagement with 4th year students eg. advice when buying equipment - consider recruiting a 4th year student??
-
More scheduled regular meetings so we're all always on the same page - communication has improved with Teams
-
-
Scope
Interdisciplinary collaborations (e.g. MDs, pharmacy etc) - challenge is to find suitable and motivated speakers. A barrier we identified was young ophthalmology - who wouldn't really be "young" (they are typically in their 30s with >10 years of medical experience)
Adding and improving non clinical and non traditional skill sets, e.g. written and verbal clinical and scientific communications
Finding more opportunities to increase credibility and reach of scope of practice. Right now ECOs may be divided in terms of what they want in terms of "scope"
However, also need to be mindful of political implications of the "how" and "what" of measurements related to scope of practice
Marketing an individual's skill set. What defines "good" at a "scope of practice"? What are suitable methods for marketing and also identifying individuals or groups with specific skill sets that comply with regulations
-
-
Creating a mentorship chain for "scope of practice" - how to develop these skills or take the first steps. Our CPD was a positive here, but no formal arrangements?
Being daring enough to try to "sell" people on non-typical topics related to scope of practice, e.g. optometric education, which ranked relatively low on the survey. A lot of respondents tended to "default" to "normal" topics like therapeutics, neuro etc
Rural and Regional
More regular communication and meet-ups - not only within ourselves but reaching out to other subcommittees with similar goals/vision e.g. student engagement (facilitating new grad relocations)
Better targetting all rural/regional optoms especially those who have moved out by themselves --> Increasing our catchment and reach e.g. blog posts, letters addressed to practices, social media
Work on our belated communications webinar - Lauren - harnessing her unique background and perspective on indigenous health and culturally sensitive communication tips - Finding a second ECO to facilitate the second half of that webinar which talks about dealing with difficult patients/staff/situations
-
How to get optoms to Rural Areas to replace retiring generations. Also getting rural students into optometry degrees in the first place. UNSW SOVS had a working group last year on that issue - it sort of fell through though as it was just before COVID lockdowns
