2nd Grade Reading Pre-Assessment Students will read a short passage about polar bears. Students will complete a worksheet distinguishing polar bear facts from opinions. This will assess whether students know definitions of a fact and opinion and whether they can identify them through reading.

Initial Strategy
These students will work together to identify 10 facts about polar bears. Each student will then be assigned 2 of those 10 facts for further Investigation. Using a QR code students will be able to access videos, pictures, books, etc, on polar bears. They will write their findings on the provided worksheet.

Students each writes 1 question they have about polar bears. Teacher collects and creates lesson/activity around those questions. Students participate In a Khoot! with those questions.

Initial Strategy
Students will be put into groups of 4. Each group will be given 15 facts and 15 opinions about polar bears. The objective is to identify and categorize which are facts and which are opinions.

Special Needs
Student(s) will use a graphic organizer with definitions at the top of the page. Adding visuals will also help with understanding of the concepts and examples. Can be used with the polar bear theme or with general Ideas.
English Language Learner
Students will work on a fact and opinion worksheet at their own individual reading level. Definitions will be given in simpler terms and examples will be easy to read/understand.
