Olga Bardina - Module 5 Unit 4 Activity 1 Pre-Assessment for Differentiation in Kindergarten Math. Lesson: Math-Unit 4: Number Pairs, Addition, and Subtraction to 10.
Pre Assessment: Choose a problem from below. You could do one at the beginning of the unit and one a few weeks in to see growth.
- Dinosaur feet problem. Show 3 ways to solve the problem (number bond, number sentence, drawing) and take a picture for Seesaw and explain the answer as a voice over
“How many dinosaurs are in the lake?”
- Have a mystery bag with two types of objects in it (candies, toys) and tell the children there are 10 inside. Have them guess how many of each object there are and how they know it makes 10.
.
To challenge the advanced students I will ask them to play this numecon: Can you make 10 different ways?
-
This group of students will be also asked to support the 2 SEN students in making the Lego number bonds.
Students will be offered Legos to make their number bonds. The students can add the coloured blocks to the white block at the top - very tactile. Also good for showing you get the same answer whichever way you write your number sentence by spinning the board around ie 7+3=10 and 3+7=10. I will ask them to write their number sentence down or create/search for a fun worksheet to fill in (maybe a lego inspired one).

Shut the Box For more advanced comprehension of how different combinations of numbers can be put together to get the same answer, students can play Shut the Box with special sets of cards (0–5 for adding; 0–10 for subtracting).Students must figure out a number combination themselves when they draw a card. For instance, if they draw a number 4 from the addition pile, they can either flip up 4, or 3 and 1. If they draw a number 6 from the subtraction pile, they can flip up 10 and 4; 9 and 3; 8 and 2; 7 and 1, or 6.
Assessment for monitoring.
Mid-Module Assessment: (can be done on Seesaw or on paper)
- Make a book of all the ways to make 10 using unifix cubes of 2 different colors.
- Make, create problems for students to solve.
Classes make problems for other classes

Another great tool to support the ELL students is to use lots of visual aid such as flash cards. These robot cards is a fun way to deepen student understanding on number pairs
This group of students will also work on the number bond to 10 stories worksheets. ( I have 4 green hands in one hand and 6 purple sweets in another hand. How many sweets do I have altogether?
When students are struggling with language and don't get the main point I'd sing and dance. We are going to watch this fun little video and review the ways to make 10. https://youtu.be/-74-_3WSrD0

Assessment for monitoring. Mid-Module Assessment: (can be done on Seesaw or on paper). Complete a number bond template and represent it in different ways (drawing, manipulatives, ten frame) and talk about the relationship between the numbers on Seesaw

Students will take this Pre-Assessment before the start of Unit 4, I will evaluate them and then divide into groups.
the 5 students who answered most, including the most difficult, of the pre-assessment questions correctly
the 12 students who have some knowledge about the topic as shown in their score, but need to develop higher order thinking skills
-
-
2 students who have little to no comprehension of the the topic and need to be tested further for special needs
