Differentiation of students within a classroom
Class assignment
A class assignment where all of the students are equal and asked to complete the task individually.
Example for chemistry: Give everyone a few basic questions about the periodic table and how to label certain items.
Organization of the class into predetermined groups
Have the class separated into groups based on their skills and knowledge that were identified from the previous assignment.
Chemistry example: The student that were able to identify every section of the periodic table correctly.
Students able to know most of the periodic table
Students that have no experience with the periodic table or have several key components confused.
Announcement to the class.
The students would be told what groups they would be placed into. No negative or degrading connotation would be used, as to avoid schoolhouse bullying for being at a lower level.
Separation of the class
Advanced students
Advanced activities
The students can be given games, creation models, and several other ideas that allow the students to perfect their knowledge and ability within the classroom.
Chemistry example:
Students can go on a computer to a certain program or website to creative and interact with certain chemical models. They can also do extra quizzes and questions on certain websites.
Teaching each other
These students would be able to handle tasks where they need to learn from each other, but more importantly they can learn the material more from their own teaching.
Chemistry example:
Each student can be given a concept and they can be asked to give a short talk or lecture about it to specific students.
Learning beyond the basics
The students that already know the basics can be asked to complete more advanced and harder questions about the material. This new set of material is usually more interesting than the basics because it can have real world applications.
Chemistry example:
A student learning about the periodic table can be asked to learn about specific more interesting elements and how they are used within the world.
Challenged students
Focused attention on the basics
These students would be retaught on the basics. These instructions would be more basic and step-by-step so as to allow the students to grasp the most amount of information as possible
Chemistry example:
All of the students would be put in a section of the classroom where they can be taught by the teacher and asked to complete some questions soon after hearing the main topic again.
Aiming to encourage them
the students would be encouraged to try their best in learning the easy to hard parts of the material. they would not be put down or harassed in any form but instead given a second chance to learn.
Determining if there is a bigger problem
This individually time with the teacher would give the students a chance to determine if there is anything possibly causing the students inability to function as expected with the class material. Possible social, mental, or other problems could be found.
On par students
Team building activity
These students would be able to work together to brain storms through questions and activities. Each on of them would be near the same level and rely on each other to get through the questions rather than just one overachiever doing all of the work for them.
Chemistry example:
Each of the students can be asked to work as a group to design and set up an experiment. Each of them can take portions of the experiment to develop.
Practice work and competitions
Students can be told that they are working to try to be better at a certain skill. All of the students would be at the level where they think they have a chance against the others because the overachievers would not be against them here.
Chemistry example:
The students are asked to know all of the masses of certain elements. Whoever can memorize all of them will get a prize. If they continue, then they have to learn something else with the periodic table.
Students found with English learning problems
Several students could be within a group where English level is not the same as other students. These students would normally be able to understand the material in class, but the language barrier is stopping them from progressing.
Assess their level
Each of the students in the class should be assessed with a test based on language in order to find the overall degree of language ability that each student in the class possesses.
Give alternative programs
For those students that do clearly have a lower level in English far beyond the normal level needed to progress through the course, there needs to be a different course of action taken for the student compared to the rest of the class.
Individual attention could be given
An assistant that is directly responsible for communicating the main ideas of the class and translating if needed.
A separate amount of material given that is simpler and gives a more step-by-step style of learning.
Incorporate more visual and kinetic learning to allow the language barrier to be less of a problem.
Students found with Special learning needs
Several students in classes could be facing disabilities or out of school problems that could hinder any attempt to learn int he expected format for class. These students should be identified and made adjustments within class specifically for them.
What problem
Each problem found within a class would need to have its own method to accommodate for. These situations need to be explained and communicated with the teacher and the student at a mutual level of understanding.
How it can be remedied and assessed
Teacher's actions
Regularly check up on the student in predictable hard to deal with situations regarding each topic within class.
Provide redesigned tests and quizzes that match the learning style of the student
Monitor the student through daily interactions formal and informal.
Students actions
Continuous effort with each subject.
Willingness to communicate and be transparent
