Pre-Assessment for Differentiation -

Positional Language By Mariel Dryden
5 students who answered most, including the most difficult, of the pre-assessment questions correctly
-
Intro to Left, Right, & Center
Explain to the children left vs right. *Hint: your left thumb and index finger extended makes an "L" shape, i.e. "l for left." Follow up this learning with a worksheet activity and the "Cha-Cha Slide" dance
Mouse in the House activity
Hands-on learning
Students are given a cup and a small toy mouse (or an object/token meant to represent a 'mouse'). First they are prompted verbally with a series of sentences involving simple positional language, and they will have to demonstrate the mouse's location using their materials. i.e. the mouse is behind the house, the mouse jumped over the house. After they have mastered the verbal prompts, they will then be asked to demonstrate position by reading simple, two letter words on the board, such as at, in, on, etc. If there is ample time dedicated to this activity, students could color and cut/assemble their own mouse! see here:
Students demonstrating exceptional understanding of simple positions will then be introduced to more advanced prepositions (above, below, through, across) via the children's book "Rosie's Walk" by Pat Hutchins

12 students who have some knowledge about the topic as shown in their score, but need to develop higher order thinking skills
Prepositions TRUE or FALSE activity - Teacher provides a sequence of images, coupled with statements concerning position. The students have to hold up a card determining if the sentence is true or false.
