What does Story of an Hour reflect about the society at that time?,…

Marriage in the 19th century is presented as both mental and physical. This is clearly seen in the quote. "Free! body and soul free...that open window" The use of the exclamatory phrase shows the joy and happiness Mrs. Mallard feels once freed from societal constraint. The word ‘body’ suggests physical elements of marriage, ‘soul’ suggests that marriage was also mental. This tells us that women were oppressed both mentally and physically. The word ‘free’ suggests that society was so oppressive in a sense that women almost were waiting for the day that they would be released. The ‘open window’ is symbolic of freedom, which again, shows that women felt as if society would constrain them, yet when they were widowed a sense of emancipation would occur. This might make the reader understand why Chopin was not the biggest fan of marriage; because of society and its beliefs.

Point: Kate suggests that society was very constraining, the only time women could receive freedom was when they were widowed.
Chopin shows us that marriage is both physical and mental. Driven by the effect of society's which could mean that Mrs Millard was being oppressed by societal standards. This is shown in the quote "Free! body and soul free...that open window" The use of the word "body" shows the freedom she has got from a physical part of her marriage. The reader doesn’t know if the husband was abusive or not, but it’s a possibility given the way that the woman reacts. She can now be or do what she wants with her life rather than cater to the needs of her husband. The use of the exclamatory pharse depicts a sense of relief and excitement. She feels like she has been freed from the obligations that come with being a wife of a man in the late 19th century. The phrase "open window" shows that she is finally getting a pass out of the miserable life she lived previously wether in love or not .yet she can't fully escape what she is living . This has a large impact on the reader allowing the reader to start questioning the way they are living their life wether it is love or friendship and how many things are they choosing to sacrifice just because of the people who mean a lot to them are not approving of it or would prefer something else.It would have especially effected the readers of the time because Chopin opens their eyes to things they probably wouldn't have thought and made them question the way they were living for whom and what.
