Pre-Assessment for Differentiation- 3rd Grade English Food Lesson
5 Students Who Under Performed on the Pre-Assesment
3 students struggling with language and at different reading levels
Students will watch multiple videos using the target vocabulary and grammar for this topic. They will follow along with the video and speak the target words with the video

Flash Cards: These students will be working with flash cards for the new vocabulary in their native language, English, and pictures. They will play a matching game with the other students to match the words with pictures.
Time with the teacher: These students will spend extra time with the teacher reading together and practicing pronunciation and phonics with the other 2 students who are struggling.
Front loading: These students will get a preview cheat sheet of the next day's vocabulary words and grammar points.
2 students who have little to no comprehension of the the topic and need to be tested further for special needs
Flash Cards: These students will be working with flash cards for the new vocabulary in their native language, English, and pictures. They will play a matching game with the other students to match the words with pictures.
Students will watch multiple videos using the target vocabulary and grammar for this topic. They will follow along with the video and speak the target words with the video. These students will be provided with a written script of these videos.

Time with the teacher: These students will spend extra time with the teacher reading together and practicing pronunciation and phonics with the other 3 students who are struggling.
Extra after school time: These students will have some extra time during the day or after school to have a sit down reading time to practice reading and phonics as it relates to this topic. They will also be able to receive help on homework and will go over the day's work with the teacher.
Front loading: These students will get a preview cheat sheet of the next day's vocabulary words and grammar points.
Assessments during the unit
These students will undergo many different formative assessments during the unit to continually assess their level and check for growth or struggles.
Small vocabulary check: Students will be shown flashcards every day by the teacher and the teacher will record what words are being missed continually and will readjust focus to cover these words more.
Students will raise Yes/No cards that they created earlier in the year to show their understanding during class, and any No cards will be expanded upon during teacher time.
These students will have a free drawing time where they can draw something that they understood, and something they didn't understand in the day's lesson. What they didn't understand will be expanded upon during teacher time.
12 Students Who Showed Limited Knowledge on the Pre-Assessment
These students will create their own flashcards by writing the target words and grammar on one side and drawing the word on the other. Students will review their flashcards during freetime or after finishing other activities.
These students will interview their friends to find out what food they like and why. They will record answers in small simple sentences.
Students will watch multiple videos using the target vocabulary and grammar for this topic. They will follow along with the video and speak the target words with the video. They will also have a written list of the target words and circle the words they hear.

Assessments during the lesson
These students will also have continual formative assessments to determine if they should be in different groups.
Students will raise Yes/No cards that they created earlier in the year to show their understanding during class, and any No cards will be expanded upon during the class. If there are too many or too few No cards then the student groups will be adjusted.
Students will complete a KWL chart for the day's lesson. If their knowledge is higher or lower than the previous day, they may change groups.
5 Students Who Excelled on the Pre-Assessment
These students will write a short journal entry detailing their favorite foods and why they like them. They may also include foods they don't like. They will then work with a partner or a small group to discuss what foods everyone likes and doesn't like. The teacher will then ask them what they learned about their friends.
Theses students will assist those students in lower levels by helping them with flashcard reviewing, answering any questions in the native language, and by leading the class discussions.
Students will watch multiple videos using the target vocabulary and grammar for this topic. They will follow along with the video and speak the target words with the video. They will also need to write down as many of the target words they can while listening.
