LO3 3.2 and 3.3
methods used to collect data
email
emails can be sent that include:
an interactive form that can be completed and returned to sender and this can be automaticaly imported into a spreadsheet as long as it contains the same fields in the same order.
sensors
device that responds to a change or input form the environment.
inputs can include light
the input is usually a sign that is converted to a human readable display or transmitted electronically over a network for reading or further processing.
passive infred (PIR) which work by detecting heat. can be used switching lights on and off and burglar alarms.
can also be used to count. can collected data each time he infrared beam is broken. beam in the wrong location can collect fake data.
pressure sensors are activated and count pressure going across the pressure mat. the locations must be carefully considered. the data is automatically collected and stored.
questionnaires/surveys
set of questions that are used to collect data and information
questions could be closed , open , rank order and rating
can be completed online or as a hard copy
open question
- allows person to give a detailed answer in their own words
closed question
- a question with only a set number of answers to be chosen from.
provided by email or website
each person completes it and submits there answers , the data can automatically input into the software being used for analysis. method means there's less chance of errors.
alternatively , could be completed on paper and typed into software , can often introduce errors.
interviews
conversation between two people
interviewer asks pre planned questions to the interviewee.
questions asked will depend on the data and information they want to collect.
methods chosen will depend on :
what data and information will be collected
where the data and information is to be collected
how the collected data and information will be stored and processed.
consumer panels
group of people who give feedback through a series of questions
loyalty schemes
point based rewards programme offered by a business to its customers. members earn points each time they use the business.
point can be changed to rewards
statistical report
can be found on websites
validity of the website must be checked
statistics can be analysed to gather further information and data
trends and patterns can be found
primary research
research that collects first hand data for specific purpose.
based on information and data
carried out by the researcher
data for a specific purpose
process very involved
cost high
time long
secondary research
research that uses data and information already collected
based on analysed and processed data and information
carried out by someone else
data may not fully meet the specifiic needs
process is quick and easy
cost low
time short
information
information created when data is processed.
information data = data + [structure] + [context] + meaning
context is the environment that we all know and understand to make sense of data
the meaning of data is revealed when it is in the correct structure and put in context. for example:
data - 01012017 the structure is NN/NN/NNNN. the context - a uk date. meaning new years day 2017
how data and information are related
information has context , while data has no context
information is data that has been coded/structured
data must be processed to become information
