the first impact is the absence of soldiers/ people, but if we focus on the middle ground, we can see 2 tiny soldiers (in the very center of the painting) who are running, probably looking for a friend or escaping from something

in the background I can see clouds of gas/ smoke and bumbing, some artificial lights that were used to lighten up the areas to be bombed or attacked
the NATURAL ELEMENTS are: pools, burned trees, clouds, lights, herbs
none of them is any longer natural: pools have been created by bombing, the herbs and trees are burned, clouds and light are artificial
despite the title, there are no roads visible at all
the important message he wanted to convey to us is that not only humans, but nature too suffers from war
