Computer Generation
First Generation
Example
UNIVAC and ENIAC Computers
Advantages
1.Vacuum tube technology made possible to make electronic digital computers.
These computers could calculate data in millisecond.
Disadvantages
First generation computers had limited programming capabilities; they used only machine language and were very slow in speed.
They were heated very soon due to thousands of vacuum tubes and were consumed a large amount of energy, therefore air conditioning was required.
Second Generation
Advantages
Second generation computers were faster, reliable and smaller as compared to First generation computers.
Second generation computers to consumed less electricity and generate less heat as compared to first generation computers.
Disadvantage
Air conditioning was required for cooling,
Maintenance was required,
Costly,
Used only for special purpose.
Example of Second Generation Computers
The IBM 7094 series, IBM 1400 series and CDC 164 etc.
Third Generation
Advantages
Less maintenance required thus cost has been reduced considerably.
Computers of this generation support high level language.
Disadvantages
Third generation computers required highly sophisticated technology required for the manufacturing of IC chips.
Cooling still required in computers of this generation.
Example of Third Generation Computers
IBM 370, IBM System/360, UNIVAC 1108 and UNIVAC AC 9000 etc.
Fourth Generation
Advantages
This generation reduced the size, cost and maintenance of the computers,
No AC required for cooling,
Very chip,
Portable and reliable.
Fourth generation computers have huge storage capacity and higher calculating speed.
Disadvantages
Computers of this generation required the latest technology for manufacturing of Microprocessors
Example of Fourth Generation Computers IBM 3033, HP 3000, PDP ± 11 and CYBER ± 205, Apple, Macintosh, IBM, Pentium
Fifth Generation
Advantages
More user friendly interfaces with multimedia features.
Availability of very powerful and compact computers at cheaper rates.
Example of Fifth Generation Computers :e.g. CRAY, PARAM-10000.
