"How to Identify and Help Struggling Students"
Identify
Take note of previous input from teachers, admin, parents, specialists
Conduct whole-class review sessions of previous materials and concepts
Perform formative assessments during in class activities to identify possible signs of struggling
If identified, pin point source of struggle and note accessory signs
Check for previous intervention or methods of assistance in identified areas
Note interventions or differentiation for students in need
Take information received from step 2 and keep note of students identified
Introduce new materials and take note of students from step 3, and any possible new students who are struggling
If many students are identifies, review the preteaching to the lesson and identify if there are any gaps in previous knowledge
Keep in mind that new systems and new teachers can cause a disruption to learning, and that constant observations should be made for all students
Provide summative assessment of materials
Note any new students who are strugglinh
Review expectations and formats for students struggling
Mark students for progress and signs of struggling
Provide a change for student feedback on performance and possible reasons for underperformance
Look at student feedback to find any possible extraneous circumstances for underperformance
Evaluate each student expected to underperform and see if they are aware or provide possible reasons
Keep student input confidential and without consequence to fully understand their situation

Meet with school specialists to express concern for student(s)
Take specialist advice/follow through with records of interventions
Request additional assistance if necessary
Collaboration and Scaffolding
Contact other teachers/tutors to discuss concerns
Provide support/input for other teachers/tutors and ask for support if necessary
Problem-solve and discuss interventions as a team
Document and revise interventions as needed
Parent/guardian input and notifications
Have meeting with parents/guardians to familiarize and identiy methods of improvement
Provide methods of support that can be done from home
Regularly otify of progress or continued struggles (as the parents/guardians permit)
Provide directions or ideas for outside support for student
Reinforcement and follow-up
Reinforce student effort and progress
Follow up with students, parents, administration, and specialists
Differentiation of Assignments/ Activities
Set expectations for student performance on assignments/activities according to mechanisms identified above
Notify other teachers, administration, and parents of these new expectations/accomodations
Make sure student understands expectations and how to follow. Explain modes of improvement and methods to improve performance to expected level
Evaluate results and make changes as necessary
Documentation and Tracking
Maintain correct and up to date information over performance, interventions, and future plans for each student
Note areas of progress as well as areas of concern
Share results with parties involved with student
Identification of source and mechanisms of help
Identifying the source or reason for the underperformance
Propose mechanishms for support for each student identified and record proposed mechanisms
Review mechanisms and tailor support according to results
