atomic structure - Coggle Diagram
atomic structure
atomic structure now
neutron - found in the nucleus, has a relative charge of 0
electron - orbits the nucleus on the surrounding shells, has a relative charge of -1
proton - found in the nucleus, has a relative charge of +1
-
-
atomic decay
there are 3 types of decay, alpha, beta and gamma
if the nucleus has too few neutrons it will emit a alpha particle - to protons and 2 neutrons - the mass number of the nucleus will decrease by 4 and the atomic number will decrease by 2
-
if a nucleus has too many neutrons it will turn into a proton and emit as a fast moving electron, this is called a beta particle. beta decay causes the atomic number to increase to 1 while the mass stays the same
gamma decay emits electromagnetic waves, it doesn't effect the atomic number or mass so they stay the same
-
isotopes and ions
isotopes are forms of an element that have the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons
